Thai Cottage Restaurant

If you’re ever wandering down Newland Street in Witham and find yourself craving authentic Thai flavors wrapped in a cozy, welcoming vibe, Thai Cottage Restaurant is that charming spot that delivers every single time. Tucked away at 149 Newland St, this hidden gem manages to bring the heart of Thailand straight to Essex-with all the warmth, spice, and soul you’d expect from a proper Thai kitchen.

What strikes you first is the balance between traditional and modern. From the warm lighting and inviting setup to the subtle decorative nods to Thai culture, the ambiance is designed to make you feel relaxed, whether you're flying solo for a quick lunch or out with friends for a more indulgent dinner. Accessibility is clearly a priority here too, with a wheelchair-friendly entrance and seating, making it a welcoming space for everyone.

But let’s be real-the main event is always the food. And Thai Cottage doesn’t mess around. Start off with their Mixed Starters, a platter that feels like a culinary tour of Bangkok's street food scene. Think crispy spring rolls, juicy satay chicken skewers dripping in peanut sauce, and that classic shrimp toast that hits all the right notes-crunchy, savory, slightly sweet. It’s the kind of plate where everyone at the table tries to act polite, but deep down they’re racing to get the last piece.

Now, let’s talk curries, because if there’s one thing Thai Cottage nails, it’s their curry game. The Massaman Curry is an absolute standout-rich, creamy, fragrant, and packed with slow-cooked chunks of meat and soft potatoes that melt in your mouth. It’s the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite just to savor what’s going on in your mouth. If you prefer something with a kick, the Yellow Curry or the Thai Green Curry steps up beautifully-aromatic, bold, with just enough spice to warm you up without setting your mouth on fire.

One of the underrated heroes of the menu is the Tamarind Duck. Crispy skin, tender meat, and a sweet-sour tamarind glaze that cuts through everything perfectly-it’s rich without being heavy, tangy without being overpowering. It’s the sort of dish that turns heads as it’s brought to your table.

And while many Thai spots might overlook their drink selection, Thai Cottage brings a little extra flair here too. Their wine list is not just good-it’s carefully curated to complement the menu. A crisp white with your curry? A bold red with your duck? They've got you. Add to that a decent selection of beers, spirits, and even coffee if you're winding down, and suddenly your casual night out becomes a whole experience.

One of the most convenient aspects is how flexible the dining options are. Whether you’re sitting in for a relaxing dinner or grabbing a takeaway on a busy weekday evening, the service is consistently attentive and friendly. It's clear they care-not just about the food, but about how you enjoy the whole experience. It’s also a go-to spot for solo diners, which says a lot. A place doesn’t get that kind of reputation unless it makes people feel comfortable.

For anyone keeping an eye on their health or simply wanting something lighter, Thai Cottage also offers healthy options without compromising on flavor. It's refreshing to see dishes that feel nourishing without being boring or bland.

Late-night cravings? This place has you covered with late-night food offerings, meaning you’re not limited to pizza or chips when you’re looking for something more soulful at the end of a long day.

In the sea of eateries around Witham, Thai Cottage Restaurant stands out-not by shouting for attention, but by consistently delivering comforting, flavor-packed Thai food with a side of genuinely thoughtful service. It’s the kind of place you end up recommending without even realizing it. You go once for the curry, and the next thing you know, it’s your go-to for every Thai food fix.

Me and my family came here last week. The staff were very friendly and kind. It was quite busy when we arrived but the food still came out in a good amount of time. There was a good amount of vegetarian options which was great and the tofu in spicy oil crisp was great. Sticky rice was a little dry but I it still enjoyed it. My family also enjoyed their food.

The food here is excellent, good size portions, well seasoned with very good heat and flavour to the Som Tam Salad & the Beef Massamann. And the Chicken Pad Thai was absolutely spot on with lots of flavour and tender freshly cooked chicken. They actually had Chang beer as well which I've struggled to find at my local Thai restaurants. The guy serving was really friendly and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. We are not locals, just passing through otherwise we would definitely get food from here again. Thank you

Had a good experience here, tasty food which they made me something that is not on the menu. Really welcoming service. Nice decor, traditional Thai. Recommended.

We have been to Thai Cottage twice this month because the food was so good. Authentic Thai food very delicious. We visited Thailand last year and this restaurant is the closest to what we had in Thailand. The tamarind duck was the highlight
